5. Volunteer With Habitat For Humanity
Are you looking for an experience that you are guaranteed to never forget? Then challenge yourself to do something you’ve never done before. I did just that and ended up working on a Habitat for Humanity Build in Washington DC!
Why was this a challenge for me?
I am as clumsy as they come. Yet there I was hammering away on the frame of a home like I did this for a living. A few hours, and hundreds of nails later, we had laid out the entire framework for the first floor of a new home.
Help our neighbors
From their site: At Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C., we believe that all our neighbors deserve safe, comfortable homes they can afford – and there’s no better way to build our communities than to all lend a hand.
I really couldn’t have put it any better than this. I truly enjoyed my time working with the folks at Habitat for Humanity. They were patient in teaching first-time volunteers and made the day a truly enjoyable and uplifting experience. Because the new homeowners are required to also work on their home, chances are the homeowner-to-be will be there working right next to you.
Think about that for a second.
In real time, you’ll be turning your effort and hard work into making a better life for the person hammering away right next to you. This was truly a great feeling and I have to admit that I think I got more out of this experience than I gave. I really do hope you get out there and help another DC resident this year.
Multiple spots in DC: You can volunteer as a group or as an individual, and they have builds all year round. Have a blast!
